You'll find everything you'd want in a tropical destination at Tortola. This largest island in the British Virgin Islands has secluded powdery white sand beaches, lush vegetation, beautiful sheletered coves, national parks and historic sites waiting to be explored.
Tortola was first discovered in 1493 by Christopher Columbus. Later, its secluded coves made it popular among the likes of the notorious pirates Captain Kidd and Bluebeard. Ultimately, the British created a plantation colony on Tortola and the surrounding islands. It remains under British rule today.
Among the historic sites are forts, churches, plantations and the Virgin Island Folk Museum. The Sage Mountain National Park has the highest elevation of the island chain. The Mount Healthy National Park has the only remaining windmill from the days when sugar plantations were the main source of revenue in the BVI. A palm lined entry leads you to the J.R. O'Neal Botanical Gardens while the Queen Elizabeth II National Park is perfect for recreation and relaxation.
If you want to surf, snorkel, sail, scuba or swim, there's a beach for you. The inviting seas are dotted with picturesque sailboats.
Your day at Tortola will be one filled with exploration and excitement.
